KOTA KINABALU, Sept 15 (Bernama) — Nine people, including five children, were killed in two separate landslides in Kota Kinabalu and Papar this morning, following continuous heavy rain overnight.
Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Kasim Muda said seven victims were found dead after a landslide struck a house in Kampung Cenderakasih, Kolombong, Inanam at around 9.15 am.
The victims included three boys and a girl, aged between two and nine, as well as two women and a man aged between 25 and 50.
“A total of 11 people were involved. Four survived, including one with a broken leg,” he told reporters at the scene.
State Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Pisar Aziz said the distress call was received at 10.02 am, with a team arriving at the scene by 10.24 am.
A total of 24 firefighters from the Lintas and Tuaran stations were deployed in the search and rescue operation.
Meanwhile, in Papar, a 38-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy were killed when a landslide hit their home in Kampung Mook.
Mohd Pisar said both victims were recovered after nearly four hours and were confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The fire department received the alert at 10.02 am, with a team dispatched to the site, located about 35 kilometres from the Papar station. The operation ended at 2.25 pm.
In a separate incident in Kampung Marahang Tuntul, also in Papar, three people were reported buried in another landslide.
Mohd Pisar said two victims have been located and efforts are underway to extricate them, while one person remains missing.
That incident was reported at 9.20 am, with 16 personnel deployed to the site, located about 13 kilometres from the fire station.
Papar is located 40 kilometres south of Kota Kinabalu.
