PKR‘s newly-elected leaders will meet to discuss the outcome and consequences of its recent party polls, including a potential new role for Rafizi Ramli, who was ousted as deputy president.
PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari said Rafizi’s position in the party will depend on the outcome of the discussion, which will be held in the next few days.
“He still wants to contribute (to the party) and, hopefully, he can because he promised not to leave,” Amirudin told reporters here today.
He said Rafizi remains committed as the Pandan MP, which meant that he could serve in a different role.
Rafizi failed to defend his deputy presidency in a straight fight with Nurul Izzah Anwar in Johor Bahru on Friday.
Nurul Izzah, the daughter of party president Anwar Ibrahim, won the post after securing 9,803 votes against Rafizi’s 3,866.
In the run-up to the party polls, Rafizi pledged to resign as the economy minister if he failed in his bid for re-election.
Amirudin, who retained his vice-presidency, said Anwar wanted to convene a meeting urgently among the party’s central leadership to discuss, among others, the appointment of office-bearers.
When asked if he knew what position Nurul Izzah had offered Rafizi when they met prior to the election, Amirudin said he had no idea.
“But maybe that would be discussed in the meeting later.”
On May 23, Rafizi revealed he had firmly rejected a last-ditch appeal from Nurul Izzah to help her following the conclusion to the party polls.
Rafizi said the two met on Tuesday at Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s residence, where Nurul Izzah not only pleaded for help but also reportedly offered him a potential position.
“I told her from the start of the meeting that I was not interested and would respect the election outcome,” he was reported as saying.
Rafizi said he believed that Nurul Izzah’s plea stemmed from concerns over the new leadership lineup, which she feared could cause trouble for Anwar and the party.
