RM3 billion Juru-Sungai Dua traffic dispersal project will reduce peak travel time from 60 to 20 minutes, benefiting 200,000 daily users by mid-2030.
BUKIT MERTAJAM: The RM3 billion traffic dispersal project between Juru and Sungai Dua toll plazas will reduce peak travel time from one hour to approximately 20 minutes.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project will ease congestion by diverting 30% of motorists to the new direct Juru-Sungai Dua route.
He confirmed the hybrid financing model with 60% government funding and 40% from the concession company during today’s groundbreaking ceremony.
The 48-month construction period targets completion by mid-2030, spanning 17.3 kilometres across three Seberang Perai districts.
“A detailed Traffic Management Plan will minimise disruption to road users during construction,” Nanta assured.
The project will benefit over 200,000 daily users and represents a key MADANI agenda initiative to improve travel efficiency.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the ceremony alongside Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and other senior ministers.
Nanta identified five congestion factors including traffic overflow from Juru toward Penang Bridge and merging conflicts at Perai Interchange.
Local Seberang Jaya traffic overlapping with expressway traffic and heavy vehicle movement in Juru Autocity area worsen bottlenecks.
The project includes constructing a direct route between toll plazas and upgrading Juru North Interchange with an overpass U-turn.
It also involves building a new slip road from Perai to Juru and upgrading the East-West Interchange to reduce signal wait times.
PLUS Malaysia Berhad has been appointed main implementing entity using the Build-Operate-Transfer model.
“KKR and PLUS will ensure timely completion to prevent resource wastage,” Nanta emphasized.
The project incorporates artificial intelligence and Building Information Modelling technologies during construction.
KKR’s statement confirmed the project addresses chronic congestion that has persisted for years due to increasing vehicle volume.
Congestion has affected economic activity in Permatang Pauh, Bukit Mertajam and Perai areas.
The project supports balanced northern region development and strengthens the national logistics network.
It is expected to stimulate economic growth in Seberang Perai, Kepala Batas and northern Penang while creating job opportunities. – Bernama
