Joao Neves’ 95th-minute header gives PSG 3-2 victory over Lyon, sending them two points clear of Marseille at the top of Ligue 1 standings
LYON: Joao Neves headed a dramatic 95th-minute winner as Paris Saint-Germain beat Lyon 3-2 to reclaim top spot in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
The reigning champions now sit on 27 points, two clear of second-placed Marseille who had briefly taken the lead on Saturday.
PSG coach Luis Enrique praised his team’s resilience after the late victory at Groupama Stadium.
“We showed the right mentality to win this match,” Enrique said.
The win provided a welcome boost for PSG following their midweek Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
Warren Zaire-Emery put the visitors ahead on 26 minutes with a powerful drive from Vitinha’s through ball.
Lyon responded four minutes later as Afonso Moreira beat the offside trap to slot past Lucas Chevalier.
PSG retook the lead inside three minutes through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s crisp finish.
Lyon players protested vigorously about Vitinha’s challenge on Tanner Tessman in the build-up.
The goal stood after a VAR review, prompting Lyon assistant coach Jorge Maciel to receive a yellow card for his reaction.
“We need to talk about video refereeing,” Maciel fumed after the match.
Nicolas Tagliafico struck the PSG woodwork four minutes before halftime.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles equalised for Lyon five minutes after the break with a superb lofted finish.
Tagliafico was dismissed in injury time after picking up a second yellow card.
Neves then headed home from the resulting corner to secure all three points for PSG.
Meanwhile, Emanuel Emegha scored twice as Strasbourg defeated Lille 2-0 at home.
The victory lifted Strasbourg to fourth place on 22 points, two ahead of fifth-placed Lille.
Emegha opened the scoring three minutes after the half-hour mark.
The 22-year-old added his second after capitalising on Olivier Giroud’s catastrophic backpass.
Lille coach Bruno Genesio lamented his team’s costly mistakes after their fourth defeat of the campaign.
Elsewhere, Lorient and Toulouse drew 1-1 in Brittany with both teams scoring penalties.
Metz beat Nice 2-1 while bottom-side Auxerre lost 2-0 at Angers. – AFP
