KUALA LUMPUR: National unity remains the most powerful force in building Malaysia’s future, says Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) senior vice-chairman Datuk Seri Ayub Yaakob.

In conjunction with the 68th National Day celebration, Ayub reminded Malaysians that independence is not only a historical milestone but a living legacy that must be safeguarded through unity, justice and inclusivity.

“As we celebrate our 68th National Day, let us not only raise our flags in pride and joy but also reflect on the true meaning of nationhood, what it demands of us, what it unites us to protect, and the responsibility it places on every citizen,” he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 1).

He stressed that Malaysia’s diversity of race, religion, language and culture should be seen as a strength, rather than a challenge.

“Unity is not a ceremonial slogan nor a passive state of coexistence.

It must be actively nurtured through inclusive policies, mutual respect and shared responsibility,” he added.

Ayub then said that true unity requires political will, ethical leadership and fairness in governance.

“The rakyat must see and feel that no group is marginalised and no region is left behind,” he said, urging leaders to uphold equity in development across education, healthcare, employment and public services.

He also said that there is a need for leadership that is empathetic and people-focused.

“Leadership is not about command. It is about connection. It is about understanding the pain of the underserved, the hopes of the young and the concerns of the silent majority,” he said.

Education must be a bridge that nurtures character, critical thinking and respect for diversity.

“We must strive for an education system that does not just produce grades but grows character. Every Malaysian child must believe they have a place in the nation’s future,” he added.

Highlighting the link between peace and prosperity, Ayub said that social stability is key to attracting investors, boosting tourism and strengthening Malaysia’s global reputation.

“When our streets are peaceful and our communities united, our economy thrives,” he said.

Ayub urged Malaysians to uphold the Federal Constitution and remain true to the five principles of the Rukun Negara as daily values rather than textbook pledges.

“These principles are our national compass. When they guide our actions, we strengthen unity and build a culture of integrity and trust,” he said.
