KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Digital is finalising an implementation plan for the National Data Repository (NDR), set to launch next year, as part of initiatives to enhance national data governance.
Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said the initiative is a strategic measure under the MADANI Government’s agenda to position Malaysia as an AI-driven nation by 2030.
“With this data centre, the government can utilise information more efficiently for decision-making, policy planning, and enhancing the quality of services provided to the public.
“Key measures to be implemented include a comprehensive study of the current state and needs of the national data ecosystem, as well as the establishment of policies and guidelines for data governance at the national level,” he said during a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He made the remarks in response to a question from Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman (PN-Kubang Pasu), who sought clarification on the timeline for developing the NDR and when it is expected to be fully operational.
He added that the NDR implementation plan will also prioritise the development of data standards to ensure consistency across all government agencies.
Additionally, it will evaluate the capabilities of infrastructure and workforce skills in data management, alongside the development of the architecture and technology platforms to be utilised.
“This approach will help ensure that all government systems can share data more securely and efficiently, while also boosting public confidence in how government information is managed,” he said.
Wilson elaborated that the MyGOV Malaysia application, a flagship government initiative aimed at modernising public services and ensuring seamless digital access, relies on the NDR to serve as a national repository of high-quality data across multiple sectors.
“This integration is crucial as it enables MyGOV to display data and information from various agencies on a single platform, conduct proactive eligibility checks, and streamline and accelerate the process of delivering aid to the public,” he said.
He stated that to ensure a secure and efficient integration between MyGOV and the NDR, key protocols will be enforced, including the use of verified data from trusted sources and the requirement for explicit user consent.
He added that the government will ensure data security measures are fully implemented in line with the Data Sharing Act 2025 (Act 864), including strict access controls over the data and all parties involved in its management.
