KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — Malaysian rapper Namewee has denied allegations that he was on the run from police, saying he voluntarily reported himself to assist investigations into the death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin.
In a statement today, Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, said he travelled from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur to meet the police as arranged.
“Earlier, I had already made an appointment with the police to lodge a report and report myself,” he said.
He added that he has now arrived at the police station and will cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation, posting a video of him outside as evidence.
“I will not flee. Previously, all seven times I was issued warrants, I voluntarily reported myself,” he said.
He dismissed suggestions that he had tried to evade authorities, saying he has “never fled”.
His comments came after some media outlets reported that police had begun a manhunt for him in relation to the murder case.
Police had earlier confirmed that the case of Hsieh’s death was now classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Kuala Lumpur police chief CP Datuk Fadil Marsus said investigators were tracking the movements of both Hsieh and Wee before her death.
Fadil said the Taiwanese influencer, known online as “Nurse Goddess”, was found dead at a hotel in the city on October 22.
He added that police were still awaiting post-mortem and toxicology results to determine the cause of death.
Police sources said Namewee was the last person seen with Hsieh before she died.
The rapper had previously been detained on drug charges during the same period.
Fadil said several individuals linked to Hsieh’s final days had also given their statements.
The influencer’s manager has called on Namewee to clarify his connection to Hsieh, saying she had never used drugs.
