Najib slapped with 165 years in jail over 1MDB conviction

The former prime minister found guilty of power abuse and money laundering involving RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds

: Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak has been sentenced to a total of 165 years’ imprisonment by the Federal Court for financial crimes involving 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) while in power between 2009 and 2018.

The sentences were handed down this evening after the former prime minister was earlier today found guilty on four charges of abusing his power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion from 1MDB funds.

The jail terms for all counts, which accumulate to 165 years, are to run concurrently.

In effect, the maximum period that he will have to serve is 15 years.

The verdict and the sentencing were ruled by Justice Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who has presided over the 1MDB trial as a judge in the High Court, before his recent elevation to the Federal Court.

Najib is presently already serving time at Kajang Prison for the misappropriation of RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.

This latest sentencing is to start concurrently while he stays in jail for his previous conviction.
