KUALA NERUS, Sept 2 (Bernama) — The Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud Alumni Association (MySESMA) has successfully raised RM1.5 million to upgrade Surau Al-Ghazali at the school here.
Its president Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong said the project marks the association’s largest contribution in celebration of its 50th anniversary.
He said the completion of the surau in phases over four months from April, along with the successful fundraising, was made possible by the coordinated efforts and dedication of all MySESMA members.
“At first, we thought this project would be difficult given the large amount of funds involved, more than RM1 million. But with everyone’s hard work, MySESMA managed to do it in stages starting last April and even finished earlier than expected,” he said when contacted today.
Mohd Zubir said he was proud that every stage of the project, from design and construction to monitoring, had been handled by MySESMA members with expertise across various fields.
According to him, the upgraded Surau Al-Ghazali can now accommodate 800 worshippers at a time, compared to 600 previously.
MySESMA had previously donated a semi-high-deck bus worth RM670,000 to Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud (SESMA) in celebration of this year’s Teachers’ Day.
