Muhyiddin lauds special parliamentary sitting to discuss US tariffs


LANGKAWI: Bersatu president Tan Sri Yassin today lauded the government’s move to call for a special parliamentary sitting on May 5 to discuss the United States’ reciprocal tariffs.

The Pagoh MP said the move was indeed appropriate, adding that Opposition lawmakers would be sharing their views during the session.

“It’s a good step and we have been hoping the matter would be debated in Parliament. The prime minister and the government have made the decision (to hold the special sitting), and I wholeheartedly welcome it.

“Perikatan Nasional MPs are ready and will provide their views on the new tariffs announced by US President Donald ,” he told reporters after attending Kedah Bersatu Aidilfitri open house Dewan Ho Peng in Kuah today.

Present were Kedah Bersatu chairman and Langkawi MP Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah, Ayer Hangat assemblywoman Shamsilah Siru, and Kuah assemblyman Amar Pared Mahamud.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim confirmed that the government is calling for a special parliamentary sitting to discuss the United States’ reciprocal tariffs.

Commenting further, said the outcome of the special session should clarify the government’s direction in engaging with the US.

“As we know, the significant impact of the tariff hikes announced by the US also affects other major countries, including , so the repercussions are not only for our country but also for the people.

“The increase in tariffs will likely lead to a rise in the cost of goods, and the consequences for our industries and national economy could be more severe, especially for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs),” he said.

Meanwhile, also confirmed that all MPs have received the notice to attend the special sitting scheduled for May 5.

“Yes, all MPs have received the notice. We will attend,” he said.
