Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin was left embarrassed after a commotion broke out during his keynote speech at the party’s general assembly last night, says youth chief Hilman Idham.
Hilman said the incident, in which a small group of delegates shouted at Muhyiddin and called for him to step down, tarnished the party’s image.
“Muhyiddin texted in the party’s supreme council WhatsApp group that the incident was ‘very embarrassing’,” Hilman told delegates during his winding-up speech today.
“What happened last night; we can’t deny. The media saw everything. We must take responsibility because we disappointed our president yesterday.”
A commotion erupted after Muhyiddin revealed in his keynote address that some quarters had been collecting signatures to oust him.
He warned that if signatures could be used to remove a president, the same could be done against other leaders at various levels of the party.
While a small group heckled him, the majority of delegates chanted “Hidup Tan Sri” in support of Muhyiddin.
Hilman also shared his personal disappointment over the incident, noting that Muhyiddin rarely responds in the group chat.
“After the incident, I went out for a drink and told my friends I couldn’t bear the sadness because we had hurt our president, so much so that he had to message in the (supreme council) WhatsApp group,” he said.
Hilman added that Bersatu must rally behind its president to prepare for the next general election.
“God willing, Muhyiddin as our prime minister candidate will lead us to victory in the next general election (GE16),” he said.
