MTHQA: Second Attempt Brings Victory For Malaysian Qari

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 (Bernama) — Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan’s second attempt in the International Quran Recital and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA) proved fruitful when he was crowned champion in the qari category in the 65th edition.

The 27-year-old from Taiping, Perak, said the victory was the greatest achievement in his career, having first represented Malaysia in 2022.

“Alhamdulillah, I feel so excited and happy as this is my first time winning an international championship,” he told reporters after the 65th MTHQA closing and prize-giving ceremony, here tonight.

Aiman Ridhwan, who began competing in recitation competitions at the age of 15, said he had learned extensively from qaris who had represented Malaysia as well as international qaris.

“I kept learning, exploring, and meeting international champions. Many of them taught me. I also built connections with qaris from Iran and Indonesia, who shared their knowledge of taranum with me,” he said.

Touching on his preparation for this year’s recital, the eldest of two siblings said he had worked on improving his recitation, tajwid, pronunciation, voice quality, and taranum delivery to ensure that his performance is well-received by the judges.

Meanwhile, the women’s qariah category champion, Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi, 31, said encouragement from her family, religious teachers, and friends fuelled her determination to keep going despite facing health issues.

“They have supported me from the very beginning, urging me not to stop fighting until I reached this stage,” she said.

The contestant from said she was unwell two days before her turn to compete. She came down with the flu, causing her voice to become hoarse.

“If you listen to my performance, my voice sounds slightly different, but Alhamdulillah, I was able to get through it and everything went smoothly,” said the mother of two.

Champions in both Recital and Memorisation categories received RM40,000 in cash, jewellery sponsored by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM), additional prizes and certificates of appreciation.

The week-long event, held from Aug 2 to 9 under the theme ‘Membangun Ummah MADANI’ (Developing a MADANI Ummah), featured 71 contestants from 49 countries.
