KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is willing to set aside its differences with other countries to find a solution to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“I think US President Donald Trump is convening a meeting with some 20 countries in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to try and resolve the issue. We will support this.
“I may have some differences with many of them, but it doesn’t matter. On issues of peace and human dignity, we should be together,” said Anwar to university students during a Higher Education Ministry event in World Trade Centre KL (WTCKL) on Monday (October 13).
On Monday, Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi were set to chair an international summit to discuss the US’s proposal to end the ongoing Israel war in Gaza.
The meeting would involve leaders, such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
“We hope the summit will bear results,” said Anwar
On Friday (Oct 10), as part of phase one of Trump‘s 20-point peace plan for Gaza.
The agreement, announced by Trump on Wednesday (Oct 8), resulted in increased aid entering the Gaza Strip over the weekend.
As part of the peace deal, Hamas was expected to hand over all living Israeli hostages by Oct 13. Over 20 Israeli hostages were still believed to be alive in Gaza.
As of Monday (Oct 13) noon, Hamas has handed over 7 Israeli hostages via the Red Cross in northern Gaza.
At the same time, Anwar said that, now that the ceasefire has been achieved in Gaza, humanitarian aid no longer has to go through the sea.
“I hope to communicate with President Abdel Fattah in the next few days to suggest allowing our team to travel through Egypt to Rafah and continue providing assistance,” said Anwar.
