KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 (Bernama) — Riders at Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations around the Klang Valley today had a pleasant surprise today as Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) staff distributed Jalur Gemilang flags and serenaded them with patriotic songs as part of the Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag campaign in conjunction with the 2025 National Month celebration.
MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim said the joint programme with the Information Department (JAPEN) is aimed at fostering a sense of gratitude for the country’s independence and promoting unity among Malaysians.
“The programme symbolises our gratitude for our country’s independence, and instills unity to develop Malaysia.
“In this event, MRT Corp staff reach out to passengers and distribute over 1,000 Jalur Gemilang flags and sing patriotic songs together to create a unique community celebration during peak hour journeys,” he said at the programme’s media conference here today.
The programme began with a symbolic handover of a Jalur Gemilang kit by JAPEN deputy director-general (digital content) Erwin Khairul Ahmad to MRT Corp, followed by the MRT Merdeka Train Ride, with over 200 MRT Corp staff on a special train to selected destinations, including Pasar Seni, Tun Razak Exchange and Ampang Park.
The programme also features the #Bersama Malaysiaku exhibition, jointly sponsored by MRT Corp, a national movement under the Prime Minister’s Office that highlights the portraits of Malaysians of various backgrounds on 22 walls at all MRT stations.
Meanwhile, Erwin Khairul said at the same media conference that JAPEN had donated 200 more Jalur Gemilang flags to MRT Corp in line with the company’s selection as an implementing partner under the Industry Cluster to make the ‘1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang’ programme a success.
He also praised premises and agencies that purchase additional flags with their own allocations as it showed their commitment towards celebrating the National Month, as JAPEN’s donations were more of an initial spark that inspires organisations to willingly spend to make the celebrations more festive.
“Flying the flag should come from the heart. When agencies use their own funds to buy more Jalur Gemilang, it proves the campaign is a real success and is accepted,” he said.
A participant of today’s programme, MRT Corp employee, Nur Asiah Izaliza Zainullah, 35, who expressed her joy at being able to join such an event for the first time.
“I’m from Sabah, the chance to join such a major event like this rarely occurs over there. So when this came up, I didn’t hesitate to join and this is one of the most memorable and fun experiences I’ve ever had.
“We see there are those who wear their traditional costumes, while others are proudly wearing traditional outfits of other races. It doesn’t matter what we wear, we all are flying one same flag, the Jalur Gemilang, and we sing patriotic songs together that we learned by heart,” she added.
