KUALA BERANG: A multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) driven by a teacher plunged into a ravine at Km52 of Jalan Kuala Jeneris-Sungai Gawi-Aring (Bukit Kawah) this evening.
Hulu Terengganu district police chief Superintendent Sharudin Abdul Wahab said they received information about an accident at a section of the road that had been closed at 5.30pm.
He said the accident involved an MPV that reportedly skidded into the 60.9m-deep ravine, with the driver and passenger, a school canteen worker, pronounced dead at the scene.
“The MPV driver, Hassan Shazali, 52, a teacher at SK Lebir, was travelling home from Kuala Terengganu to Gua Musang, Kelantan.
“The accident is believed to have occurred when the victims, who were travelling from Hulu Terengganu towards Gua Musang, entered a road that had been closed due to a landslide, before their vehicle skidded and plunged into a ravine 200ft (about 60.9m) deep.
“Meanwhile, the passenger, Suzaimah Che Azis, 34, was thrown out of the vehicle,” he said.
He said the bodies were taken to Hulu Terengganu Hospital’s forensics unit for post-mortem.
He said the incident occurred on a federal road, where the surface was uneven and closed to all vehicles due to the landslide.
The accident happened during daylight and in fine weather.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
