KUALA LUMPUR: Films that portray bullying may be influencing students to behave similarly in schools, said Hulu Terengganu member of parliament Datuk Rosol Wahid.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat during a debate on a parliamentary report on bullying in schools, Rosol said such content, often found in cinemas or on streaming platforms like Netflix, can shape young minds.

“Movies depicting bullying or ragging in hostels seem to be influencing our children and students to some extent,” he said.

Rosol said the responsibility to curb bullying should not rest solely on schools, adding that parents and the community must also play a role. He also suggested reintroducing caning for disciplinary purposes, recalling his own school days when the punishment was allowed.

“Back then, caning was allowed in schools. Today, the ministry often sides with parents who complain, which limits teachers’ authority to discipline students,” said the former teacher.

Rosol added that he understood the varying capabilities of students and that education methods must be tailored accordingly.

“There are high-achieving students, average ones, and those who struggle. We can’t apply a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching,” he said.
