PETALING JAYA, Sept 16 — Motorists using electronic number plate flippers to hide or alter their vehicle registration numbers may face legal action under the Road Transport Act, authorities have warned.
In a report today by The Star, these devices, apparently easily available on major e-commerce platforms, allow number plates to be concealed or switched at the press of a button.
Checks by the English daily found the plate flippers priced between RM150 and RM350. One version features a motorised mechanism that rotates the number plate to display a different set of digits, while another uses a sliding panel to hide the original plate entirely.
Listings promoted the product as a means to protect number plates from daily wear and tear, while also offering “enhanced privacy”.
Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri told The Star that it is an offence to display a registration number other than one officially issued to the vehicle.
He said it is also an offence under Section 108 of the Road Transport Act to present a plate in a misleading or false manner, adding that those convicted face up to one year in jail, a maximum fine of RM5,000, or both.
Authorities have yet to confirm if enforcement actions have been taken against sellers or buyers of the devices online.
