KUALA LUMPUR: The mother of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Reserve Officers’ Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, who died during training, has insisted on witnessing the second post-mortem scheduled for tomorrow morning, despite being offered the option to stay away.
Family lawyer Datuk Naran Singh Ara Singh said that Syamsul Haris’ mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, 45, had viewed the body today and identified it as her son ahead of the second post-mortem.
He said she was also briefed by doctors on the post-mortem procedure and met with the police investigation team.
“Despite being given the option to stay out of the post-mortem tomorrow, the mother remains firm in her decision; she wants to witness the entire procedure in person,” Naran said after meeting with forensic doctors and police officers at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) today.
He added that he was present during the identification process this afternoon and confirmed that the remains were intact.
Preliminary examinations, including X-rays and CT scans, had already been completed upon the arrival of the body at HKL earlier today.
“The full post-mortem will begin tomorrow at 9am. Cleaning the body now could disturb the findings,” said Naran.
Syamsul Haris’ remains were exhumed this morning, exactly one month after his burial, under a court order allowing a second post-mortem.
The exhumation, conducted at the Kampung Rinching Hulu Muslim Cemetery, began at 8.45am and concluded at 9.22am, after which the body was transported to HKL.
When asked how long the second post-mortem would take, Naran said: “It’s difficult to say. It could be lengthy, but with three doctors, we hope it will move faster.”
He added that the family, particularly Syamsul Haris’ mother, was relieved that their request for a second post-mortem had been approved and that they had been fully briefed by both the police and doctors.
Syamsul Haris, 22, died on July 28 while undergoing training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, Johor. He was buried the following day at the Kampung Rinching Hulu Muslim Cemetery.
The exhumation order was granted by Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gucharan Singh Preet, following an application by Ummu Haiman earlier this month.
