KOTA KINABALU: Molly Antutu, 42, and her 14-year-old daughter, Syamimi, survived a landslide that completely destroyed their home in Kampung Kopungit, Kepayan, last night.
The incident occurred around 8.45pm when the house suddenly shook and slid downwards after a loud thud, leaving the house 100 per cent destroyed.
Molly said that in the chaotic moments, she could only think of death, telling her daughter, “Let us die together, holding each other.”
Moments later, zinc sheets from the collapsing roof pinned them down before sliding off, allowing them to crawl out to safety. Neighbours quickly came to help before contacting the authorities.
Molly sustained minor injuries to her right leg, while her daughter escaped without serious harm.
Kota Kinabalu Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Captain (PA) Aizex Junior said the emergency call was received at 9.15pm, and a team of five personnel arrived about 20 minutes later.
“Upon arrival, the team assessed the scene and found that a house had been completely destroyed by the landslide, which measured about 15 metres wide and 25 metres high. Fortunately, both residents survived and managed to escape. Our team immediately checked for injuries, focusing on the right leg,” he said.
He added that two other landslides occurred nearby and monitoring operations were ongoing to ensure the safety of residents in the area.
