The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has released its latest vehicle registration data for April 2025 and the Proton e.MAS 7 retains its status as Malaysia’s #1 EV model for four consecutive months.

For the month of April, overall EV registrations for Malaysia have increased by 79.7% Year-over-Year (YOY) from 1,609 units in April 2024 to 2,892 units in April 2025. Last month, EVs account for 4.44% of total vehicle registrations (65,200) in Malaysia.

Between January to April 2025, a total of 9,719 EVs were registered in Malaysia, which is a 54.32% increase from 6,298 units registered during the same period last year.

Proton e.MAS 7 registrations continue to rise, 799 units in April 2025

Top 30 EVs in Malaysia for April 2025

Proton e.MAS 7 remains the #1 best selling EV model with 799 units registered last month. This is followed by the BYD Sealion 7 at #2 with 393 units and BYD Atto 3 at #3 with 321 units.

The BYD Atto 3 has regained traction following the release of the updated Atto 3 Ultra which has a special rebate offer and it comes bundled with an 8-year service package.

Despite lower deliveries, the premium Denza D9 MPV is still holding on at #5 with 157 units registered, while the Tesla Model 3 went up slightly to the #7 spot.

Xpeng now has two entries on the top 10 list with the Xpeng X9 MPV at #9 with 77 units, followed by the Xpeng G6 SUV at #10 with 76 units.

Top 30 EV models in Malaysia for January to April 2025

Looking at the top 30 EV models registered in the first four months of 2025, the Proton e.MAS 7 is on an upward trend and it has registered 2,537 units so far. This is followed by the BYD Sealion 7 with 1,234 units, the BYD M6 with 727 units, BYD Atto 3 with 725 units and Tesla Model 3 with 608 units.

SUVs remain the most popular body type and we are also seeing a rise of fully electric MPVs on the top 10 list. The Denza D9 is currently the most popular premium MPV with 395 units, followed by the Zeekr 009 with 312 units registered this year so far.

Registrations for the Tesla Model Y continues to decline with only 126 units registered this year so far. However, Tesla is expected to make a come back in May with the delivery of the new Model Y “Juniper”.

BYD and Denza collectively commands 41.7% EV Market Share in Malaysia

Top 20 EV brands in Malaysia for January to April 2025

On the brand level, BYD remains the #1 EV brand in Malaysia with a total of 3,207 units so far (January to April 2025) and it is attributed to its wide lineup which covers hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs.

When combined with its premium sub-brand Denza, the BYD group has a total of 1,205 registrations in April 2025, which represents a market share of 41.7%.

Meanwhile, Proton which currently has just one EV model on sale is currently at #2 with 2,537 units registered so far. With 799 units registered in April, Proton commands a market share of 27.63%. Essentially, one out of four EVs registered in 2025 is a Proton e.MAS 7.

Tesla is currently the #3 brand with 735 EVs registered so far, followed by BMW at #4 with 587 units. The list continues with Denza at #5 (395), Xpeng at #6 (380) and Zeekr at #7 (360).
