KUALA LUMPUR: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is reviewing a proposal to expand the Asian Champions League Elite (ACLE) from 24 to 32 clubs.
A Vietnamese media outlet reported that the proposal was discussed at a recent AFC Competitions Committee meeting.
If AFC approves the expansion, this could lead to more Malaysian clubs playing in the continent’s elite competition.
Currently, Malaysia has two direct slots in Asian club competitions — usually taken by top teams from the Super League.
Clubs such as Selangor, KL City, Terengganu and other strong Super League teams could benefit from the additional slots.
If implemented, the expansion would mark the first increase in teams since the ACLE competition was capped at 24 clubs.
