KOTA KINABALU: Smuggled drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and controlled goods, as well as the detention of Vietnamese fishing vessels, were among the largest seizures made by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in integrated operations throughout 2025.
The agency said a total of 273 cases were recorded, with estimated seizures amounting to RM48.5mil.
MMEA Sabah and Labuan director First Admiral Khairulanuar Abd Majid @ Razali said the operations included a RM2.5mil drug bust in Kota Kinabalu, a foiled fuel smuggling attempt worth RM830,000 in Sandakan, and the seizure of eight Vietnamese fishing vessels valued at RM12mil in Kudat.
“We also recorded total seizures of RM974,000 in Labuan, RM2.6mil in Lahad Datu, RM989,000 in Semporna, and RM9.9mil in Tawau,” he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 9).
Beyond these high-profile cases, Khairulanuar said the MMEA conducted 59,119 inspections and 28,320 raids, underscoring its commitment to preventing maritime crime.
In terms of search and rescue, he said 23 cases were recorded, with 244 victims saved and assets worth RM23.1mil recovered.
To strengthen coordination, preparedness and skills, the MMEA carried out joint operations and training with other agencies, including Ops Naga Sabah, Ops MARDOF, the Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) and the Maritime Mass Rescue Operation (MMRO).
“These exercises and collaborative initiatives are vital not only for crime prevention but also for more efficient search and rescue operations,” he said.
On other developments, Khairulanuar said the MMEA received assets from the United States Coast Guard, including the former USCG Cutter Steadfast, which has been stationed in Sabah. The agency also welcomed its first intake of maritime cadets from Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Construction works on the Semporna Maritime Zone complex are ongoing, he added.
Khairulanuar said the Madani roadshow programme officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was another significant milestone in strengthening maritime–community relations.
He said the MMEA would continue to enhance operational preparedness, improve asset and human capital capabilities, and strengthen inter-agency cooperation to further improve performance in combating crime and safeguarding state sovereignty.
“We thank all parties who have supported and assisted us throughout the year,” he added.
