KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry (MOT) is studying the effectiveness of installing Platform Automatic Gate System (PAGS) at the Kelana Jaya and Ampang Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations to enhance safety at public transport stations, especially for people with disabilities (PwD).
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the initiative follows the death of a blind passenger who was run over by an LRT train after falling onto the tracks at Titiwangsa station on Feb 22, Bernama reported.
“To ensure such incidents involving PwD passengers at Titiwangsa LRT station do not recur, Prasarana is conducting a feasibility study on implementing the Platform Automatic Gate System at Kelana Jaya Line and Ampang Line LRT stations,” he said when replying to Senator Tuan D.J. Isaiah on MOT’s commitment to strengthening safety at public transport stations, particularly for PwD passengers.
Hasbi added that several interim measures would also be introduced, such as deploying additional auxiliary police at train stations, upgrading PwD-friendly facilities including replacing old lifts with new ones, and improving access routes and clearer signage to ease movement for disabled passengers.
