KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (Bernama) — The Embassy of Mexico in Malaysia brought the colours, sounds, and flavours of Mexico to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night with lively performances in celebration of “El Grito” at the Malaysia Tourism Centre’s (MaTiC) auditorium hall.
The annual event, which commemorates the start of Mexico’s independence, drew together members of the local Mexican community, including foreign diplomats, government officials, and Malaysians eager to experience the country’s vibrant culture.
Guests were treated to a rich blend of performances that transported them straight to Mexico.
Mariachi rhythms filled the hall, highlighted by a stirring performance from Mexican singer Rafa Váquez, while dancers in traditional attire swirled across the stage with folkloric precision.
Complementing the Mexican performances, Malaysian traditional performances also took to the stage, symbolising the friendship and shared heritage between the two nations.
Mexican Ambassador to Malaysia Luis Javier Campuzano, who attended the celebration, said the evening was especially meaningful as it brought together the small Mexican community in Malaysia to celebrate their national pride abroad.
“This celebration is not only about honouring Mexico’s independence but also about sharing our culture with Malaysians, through our music, dances and even the food we served tonight.
“It is a way to strengthen people-to-people connections and deepen the cultural ties between our countries,” he said.
The event centred around stage performances, with breaks in between for guests to step outside the hall to savour authentic Mexican cuisine, adding flavour to the festive atmosphere that echoed the traditions of Mexico.
“El Grito,” or the “Cry of Dolores,” marks the call made in 1810 that launched Mexico’s independence struggle against colonial rule. It is commemorated every year on the eve of Mexican Independence Day, Sept 16, by communities across the globe.
