MetMalaysia issues thunderstorm warning for several states


KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for multiple states and federal territories, effective until 9pm today.

The department, in a statement, said heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in parts of Kedah (Yan, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu), Perak, (Gua Musang), Terengganu (Kemaman), and Pahang (Jerantut, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan and Rompin).

The same conditions are also forecast for (Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang), as well as the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and , Negri Sembilan, Melaka and several districts in Johor (Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai and Johor Baru).

In Sarawak, the warning covers Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit (Song, Kapit and Bukit Mabong), Bintulu (Tatau), Miri (Telang Usan) and Limbang. In Sabah, it applies to Sipitang, Beaufort, Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kota Belud and Kudat.

MetMalaysia said the warning was issued following signs of thunderstorms with rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour, which are either imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.

The department explained that a thunderstorm warning is a short-term forecast, valid for periods not exceeding six hours at a time.
