MELAKA: Prominent Melaka philanthropist and retired lawyer Datuk Tan Hor Sam has declared he has no plans to slow down his charitable work as he celebrated his 77th birthday surrounded by family, friends, and well-wishers.

“I’m not done yet and want to share more good vibes with the locals.

“My devotion is to continue serving the people, and I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have supported me along the way,” Tan said in an interview on Thursday (May 1).

His birthday celebration at a leading hotel here was graced by notable figures including MP for Kota Melaka Khoo Poay Tiong, Melaka Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee Chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem, Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong, Bandar Hilir representative Leng Chau Yen, and former Penang police chief Comm Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye.

As part of the occasion, Tan presented monetary contributions to two vernacular schools and various non-governmental organisations, further demonstrating his unwavering commitment to education and social welfare.

Tan, a UK-trained Barrister-at-Law, managed a legal firm in Kuala Lumpur for 18 years before returning to Melaka.

Since then, he has held honorary roles in over 30 associations encompassing sports, cultural, religious, and educational fields.

Between 1978 and 1986, he also played a key role in the development of new facilities for vernacular schools in Kuala Linggi and Kuala Lumpur.

Tan said his birthday is a moment he will treasure as an opportunity to share happiness with others.

“I will continue my philanthropic duties for as long as I am able,” he said.

His wife, Datin Koh Bee Chu, expressed her joy at celebrating the milestone alongside the community.

“We are so blessed to mark this day with those who matter most.

“This celebration is a memory we will hold close to our hearts forever,” she added.
