MELAKA: A total of 106 locations across the state have been identified as flood-prone ahead of the northeast monsoon, which is expected to begin on Nov 13 and continue until March 2026, said the Melaka Fire and Rescue Department.
The department’s state director Mohd Zaidi Ma’at said the locations were identified based on monitoring and information from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS).
“A total of 106 areas have been identified statewide as being at risk of flooding, either due to heavy rain, flash floods or high tide,” he said on Tuesday (Nov 11).
Mohd Zaidi said 53 areas are in Melaka Tengah, 27 in Alor Gajah and 26 in Jasin districts.
He added that about 450 uniformed personnel are on standby for operations, assisted by more than 50 non-operational staff.
“Locals are advised to alert the authorities immediately if they notice signs of rising river levels or early flooding so that prompt action can be taken to protect lives and property,” he said.
The department has also formed a rapid response team operating around the clock from the Ayer Keroh Fire and Rescue station, equipped with assets such as aluminium boats, four-wheel-drive vehicles, power generators and life jackets, ready for emergency operations within or outside the state.
Mohd Zaidi also noted that every fire station has a contingency plan that includes local disaster-risk profiles for floods, fire and industrial hazards.
“For example, in industrial zones, we have mapped out locations of hazardous materials, nearby hydrants and the nearest responding stations to ensure prompt response.
“These plans are reviewed and updated regularly,” he said.
