PETALING JAYA: It is more important to find solutions to the issues surrounding Edward Wong Yi Xian’s inability to enter his chosen university, says Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
In a video statement on Wednesday (Sept 10), the minister said that the ministry sympathises with the situation.
“This issue should be addressed through discussion or by obtaining the appropriate explanation from the responsible party, avoiding further speculation and debates that could exacerbate the situation,” he said.
He stated that he has informed the parties representing the student and his officers that they should engage directly with each other.
“We need to adopt this approach to ensure we can listen to both sides,” he said
Previously, MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong raised the plight of Edward Wong Yi Xian, who achieved a perfect CGPA of 4.0 and a near-perfect 99.9% overall merit score for the STPM examination but claimed he was rejected by Universiti Malaya for its Accounting course under the merit-based UPUonline system.
The same university, however, had previously offered Wong a place in the accountancy programme through the open channel, with tuition fees amounting to more than RM80,000 – 10 times more than if he had enrolled through the UPUonline system.
