CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from a man to help in the investigation into a doctored image of a local news report shared on Facebook.

It said the statement was taken at the Alor Gajah Police headquarters in Melaka, and a mobile phone and SIM card were seized for digital forensic analysis.

“The edited image, which included the logo of the media portal Utusan Malaysia, has been found to be fake and has the potential to mislead the public.

“Utusan Malaysia has also denied publishing the report and clarified that it was a misuse of the newspaper’s name and logo,” it said in a statement on Thursday (Nov 6).

The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).

MCMC urged the public to always verify the authenticity of information before sharing it on social media, especially content using the identity or logo of media organisations without authorisation.

“The dissemination of false content can undermine the credibility of legitimate news sources and may result in legal action,” the statement added. – Bernama
