The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from three influencers over a viral video showing them handing chicken bones to a homeless man. The video has sparked widespread outrage online.
In a statement today, MCMC said the trio were questioned today at the Iskandar Puteri police headquarters in Johor. Police seized three mobile phones and the SIM cards to assist in the investigation.
It said the case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities, an offence that provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, up to two years’ imprisonment or both if convicted.
MCMC previously said it was probing the video and warned that it took a serious view of content that exploited marginalised groups for entertainment.
One of the influencers issued an apology yesterday over the video, which showed him and two others giving a packet of rice with chicken bones to a homeless man.
He claimed the homeless man had agreed to participate in the video and that the trio later bought him a proper meal with two pieces of fried chicken.
The video, which has since been deleted, drew a backlash from netizens and calls for an investigation, including from Semambu assemblyman Chan Chun Kuang.
Several NGOs also criticised the act, calling it dehumanising and exploitative.
Food4U founder Tony Lian said feeding the needy should come from compassion, not cruelty, while Make It Right Movement CEO Brian Lariche said poverty should never be turned into a social media gimmick.
