A senior citizen is being investigated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for allegedly posting an offensive Facebook comment on the Prophet Muhammad and Islam.
The 63-year-old Malaysian had his statement recorded at the Iskandar Puteri police headquarters in Johor on April 20, MCMC said in a statement.
“A mobile phone and SIM card believed to have been used by the suspect to post the comment have been seized for forensic analysis,” it said.
It added that the investigation paper would be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor soon.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities, punishable by a maximum RM500,000 fine, a jail term of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC said it would not tolerate the misuse of social media platforms, especially involving the 3Rs (religion, race, and royalty) as this could threaten interfaith harmony and disrupt public order.
