KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the police will roll out a new cybercrime enforcement course next year to strengthen the capacity of officers in tackling increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
The MCMC, in a statement, said the course will feature standardised training modules for officers from various government agencies, supported by expertise from national cybercrime security bodies.
Launched today in conjunction with the closing ceremony of the Inter-Agency Retreat on Cyber Crimes 2025, the programme marks a key step in the government’s efforts to build a more coordinated and capable enforcement force to address cybercrime.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who officiated the launch, said the initiative underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing national preparedness against complex and transnational cyber threats.
“In today’s digital landscape, cybercrime is a borderless threat that requires a well-trained and well-equipped enforcement community. This collaboration ensures our officers are ready to meet that challenge,” he said.
The MCMC said that in 2024, the average cost of data breaches in the region was estimated to exceed US$3 million (RM12.7 million), while losses due to fraud across Asia reached US$688.4 billion, with one in two people falling victim to scams every month.
“Since 2022, MCMC has blocked 2.2 billion suspicious calls and 2.2 billion unsolicited SMS messages, terminated 185,499 suspicious SMS lines, and submitted 12,001 takedown requests for fraudulent investment content.
“The course is part of a broader collaboration between MCMC and the police, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed on March 11, 2024, focused on capacity-building in investigation and enforcement,” it added.
The MCMC also said both agencies have carried out joint operations, including Op Pedo 1 in December 2024, Op Pancing in September 2025, and Op Pedo 2 later the same month.
The initiative is expected to produce an integrated and responsive enforcement force capable of combating cyber threats that endanger national and public security.
