The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has inspected premises belonging to social media influencer Aliff Ahmad as part of a probe into a Facebook post in which he allegedly touched on race, religion and royalty.
In a statement, MCMC said the matter was being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA) for improper use of network facilities, Harian Metro reported.
“The inspection was done after MCMC obtained a search warrant issued by the Kuala Lumpur sessions court under Section 247 of the CMA.
“A mobile phone and SIM card were seized for further investigation,” the commission was quoted as saying.
In a separate report, news portal Malaysiakini identified the premises involved as the Scrut Auto vehicle inspection workshop in Kuala Lumpur, of which Aliff is a co-founder and owner.
It said that a joint team of police and MCMC officers spent over five hours yesterday at the workshop.
Aliff’s lawyer Haziq Aizuddin Subhi said the team arrived at the premises around 5pm and left close to 11pm with his client in tow, to the Pudu district police headquarters (IPD).
“He (Aliff) handed over his mobile phone at around 5pm. They wanted to access his Facebook account, but there were ‘login issues’ that dragged the situation until close to midnight,” he said.
Last month, MCMC summoned Aliff over a post in which he said he would conduct a background check on Nurul Izzah Anwar using a system he co-founded.
He had asked what Nurul Izzah‘s job was and how the daughter of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was funding her political career.
