PETALING JAYA:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today recorded the statement of a man who had claimed to be the pathologist who conducted the autopsy of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.

The commission said the man was the owner of a TikTok account impersonating a pathologist, who claimed to have been involved in the autopsy.

It said the suspect was tracked down in Kota Damansara late last night after the commission recorded the statements of two other persons who were with the suspect in a livestream held by the TikTok account.

“The health ministry has confirmed that the suspect is not a pathologist.

“The suspect was brought to the Dang Wangi police headquarters to have his statement taken. His communication devices were also confiscated for further investigation,” it said in a statement.

The case is being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities.

If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison, a maximum RM500,000 fine, or both.

The commission said the case is also being probed by the police for sedition and public mischief with the intent to cause fear or alarm to the public.

Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school’s hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the following day.

Her body was exhumed on Aug 9 to allow for a post-mortem amid allegations of bullying.
