KUALA LUMPUR: MCA Youth chief Ling Tian Soon backed Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh’s call for Barisan Nasional (BN) to reconsider its partnership with the unity government, saying the decision should reflect the coalition’s long-term interests.
Ling said all parties should assess Akmal’s call from a broader perspective to safeguard BN‘s future.
“All parties should view the call by Akmal on relations with the unity government from a broad perspective for the sake of BN‘s future,” Ling said in a statement quoted by FMT.
He said the appeal, made during Umno Youth’s special convention on the party’s role in the unity government yesterday, reflected the stance he had outlined at the MCA Youth general assembly last month.
“I reiterate our position that MCA should withdraw its support for the unity government if the government continues to allow injustice against the people to persist,” he said.
Ling also criticised DAP leaders, saying they had failed to govern effectively despite holding ministerial positions.
“Not only have DAP leaders continued their insolence by repeatedly insulting Najib, they are also seen as having failed to govern the country well despite having the opportunity to sit in ministerial seats as policymakers,” he said.
During the convention, Akmal also called for the revival of Muafakat Nasional, the electoral alliance between Umno and Pas formed in 2019 to unite the Malay-Muslim electorate.
The pact was established when both parties were in the opposition following Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the 2018 general election.
Meanwhile, Ling said MCA remained open to cooperation with any political coalition, provided the parties involved shared common objectives, including moderation, rejection of extremism and adherence to the Federal Constitution.
