IPOH, Sept 13 (Bernama) — The existing Matriculation and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) systems should be continued as both play their respective roles and functions within the national education system, said PKR Youth (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.
He said if there are proposals for improvements based on current needs, they could be submitted to the government, particularly the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education.
“In my view, and that of AMK, we believe the current system has no issues. We can continue with it because STPM has its own function and matriculation has its own function as well,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after officiating the Kita Anak Malaysia Carnival organised by Pertubuhan IKRAM Malaysia (Ikram) at Mydin Meru Raya here today.
Prior to this, New Youth Association of Universiti Malaya (Umany) president Tang Yi Ze was reported to have called for the abolition of the Matriculation programme and for STPM to be made the sole standard for admission into undergraduate programmes at public universities (UA).
In another development, Muhammad Kamil, who is also the Political Secretary to the Finance Minister, said his side is ready to bring forward proposals to expand the types of goods and retail shops eligible for the use of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) appreciation aid scheme to the Ministry of Finance for consideration.
He said the government has always been attentive to public views and is open to improving the scheme for the benefit and well-being of the people.
“I believe in this matter, regarding the expansion of shops or goods that fall under categories eligible for SARA payments, the Ministry of Finance will give it due attention and consideration, and it will be announced later, insya-Allah,” he said.
Meanwhile, commenting on the programme, Muhammad Kamil said the fourth series of the carnival organised by Ikram, which selected Mydin Meru Raya in Perak as its venue, had successfully served as a platform to celebrate the diversity of Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.
“On behalf of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, I would like to thank Ikram for organising this very good programme,” he said.
