Married couple drown after boat capsizes in Marang waters

MARANG: A married couple who went out to sea to fish were found drowned today after their fibreglass boat capsized.

Marang police chief, Superintendent Mohd Sofian Redzuan, said the couple, Abdul Rahim Mustaffa, 47, and Norhasriah Che Osman, 46, from Kampung Pulau Kerengga, were discovered by local fishermen.

Norhasriah’s body was found in the waters off Kuala Merchang at 4.30pm, and her husband, Abdul Rahim, was found 15 minutes later, he said.

Sofian said the 20-foot boat capsized after being hit by strong waves and winds. According to initial investigations, the couple had gone out to sea at about 7.45am today, and the boat was believed to have lost control after being struck by rough waves before it capsized.

He added that weather conditions in the waters off Kuala Merchang had been unstable since Thursday, with rough seas and strong winds.

“Therefore, police advise all fishermen and the public to always take weather forecasts into account before going out to sea to avoid unwanted incidents,” he said.

The victims’ bodies have been sent to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu for post-mortem.
