KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — The Marine Department of Malaysia (JLM) has confirmed that no hazardous or toxic gas was released following an explosion and fire aboard the Malta-registered container ship KYPARISSIA at Wharf 4 of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, yesterday afternoon.
JLM said in a statement that preliminary investigations found the fire originated from one of the containers while the vessel was en route from PTP to Lome, Togo.
“Following the incident, the vessel turned back to PTP (Wharf 4) to seek emergency assistance and undergo further inspection,” it said.
The incident claimed three lives, while three others were injured and sent to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
“PTP has confirmed that no release of hazardous or toxic gas occurred as a result of the incident.
“The affected area is under full control, and all entry and exit routes to the wharf, including the main gate and operational zones, have been closed for safety reasons,” JLM said.
The department added that an investigation team has been set up to determine the exact cause of the incident and that it is working closely with the relevant authorities and the ship’s agent.
“The JLM Oil Spill Response Team remains on standby should the need arise.
“The public is advised not to make any speculation and to refer only to official statements issued by the authorities to avoid the spread of false information.
“JLM also extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims,” it said.
