GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) in Penang confiscated 100 “Cinnamomum” saplings brought in from Taiwan at Penang International Airport earlier today.
Maqis said inspection of a passenger carrying two boxes containing the saplings revealed that the items lacked the necessary import permit.
“The 67-year-old man claimed the 100 saplings, valued at RM3,900, were for personal use.
“Further investigations are underway,” the department said.
All saplings have been seized, and the case is being investigated under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 for importing without a valid permit.
