JERLUN: A 45-year-old man was killed when his brother-in-law attacked him with a parang, severing his head, during a fight yesterday.

Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim said the incident came to light after police received a call from a member of the public at 7.05pm about the fight at Kampung Pida 3.

Radzi said the victim was found lying in the padi field with his head severed about a metre from his body, and with several slash wounds on other parts of his body.

The body was located about 30 metres from the suspect’s house.

“The suspect was arrested around 8pm after police persuaded him to surrender while he was still holding the parang.

“Police also seized the 30cm machete to assist investigations into the case,” he said.

Radzi said after the incident, the suspect remained in a room at his house before being persuaded to come out about 15 minutes later.

Radzi confirmed that both the victim and the suspect had no prior criminal records and were padi farmers living nearby to each other.

“The victim was married with two children, while the suspect is single.

“The victim’s body has been sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for post-mortem,” he said.

He also said police are expected to obtain a remand order against the suspect at the Alor Star Court Complex later today.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

Radzi advised the public not to share unverified information, as the motive is still under investigation and will be confirmed by police.
