KLANG: Mohd Farizal Omar, 46, hooked a 2.1kg kaci (sweetlips) fish to snag the RM3,000 grand prize at the KOPMEDIA 2025 Merdeka Casual Fishing Competition today.

The father of two defeated 151 participants who took part in the competition at Shafiq Sea Lion Pond 3.

Farizal said it was the biggest win he had achieved in any competition, describing it as Merdeka fortune.

“I was lucky because a friend registered my name at the last minute. I consider this as Merdeka fortune for me and my family,” he said.

The second prize of RM1,500 went to Rosli Misran, while the third prize of RM700 was won by Abd Rahman Mohamad.

Media Prima Bhd Cooperative’s Membership Welfare, Communications and Event Management manager, Riduan Ahmad, said the competition was KOPMEDIA’s first fishing event, aimed at strengthening ties among cooperative members, Media Prima staff, and the local community.

“The cash prizes were not only for the top three winners but also for those placed fourth to 30th, who received between RM100 and RM500.

“There were also 80 lucky draw prizes and six prizes for participants who turned up in the best Merdeka-themed attire.

“This programme shows the cooperative’s commitment to instilling the spirit of independence among its members through beneficial activities,” he said.

The grand prize was presented by Media Prima Bhd Cooperative president, who is also Media Prima Group’s chief financial officer Rosli Sabarudin.

The competition saw a total of 74 fish caught, with a combined weight of 103.45kg, including kaci, snapper, and sea bass.
