Man interviewed by tourist in viral clip denies being a mat rempit

KUALA LUMPUR: : A man interviewed by a foreign tourist against the backdrop of a mat rempit or illegal street racing scene at the Jalan Ampang/Jalan Yap Kwan Seng junction in a viral social media clip has denied any involvement in such activities.

Federal Police Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the matter came to light after the police detected the clip on Aug 17.

The clip showed the foreign tourist interviewing a local resident while illegal street racing took place in the background near Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

“We have identified the individual featured in the clip and confirmed that he was not involved in mat rempit activities. He was simply at the location during the interview,” he said.

“The police will continue enforcing road laws and carrying out preventive measures through Op Motosikal, Op Samseng Jalanan, and other operations in Kuala Lumpur city centre based on intelligence and information received,” he added in a statement yesterday.

Yusri said that during operations conducted from January until last month, 184 people were arrested for reckless and dangerous driving.

“Meanwhile, 92 arrests were made for using fake registration numbers, and a total of 830 motorcycles were seized for various offences, particularly noisy exhausts,” he said.

He added that preventive and enforcement operations around Jalan Ampang near KLCC resulted in 129 motorcycles being seized for illegal modifications.

“Road users are advised not to use public areas as gathering spots for activities that may disturb public order.

“Parents also play a role in supervising their children to ensure they are not influenced by unhealthy activities,” he said.
