
A homeless man was charged in the magistrates’ court here today with murdering a fellow homeless man last month.
Aiman Abdullah, 39, is accused of killing P Saravanan, 45, under a bridge near Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields at around 10pm on Nov 23.
The charge falls under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or 30 to 40 years in prison and a minimum of 12 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction.
The charge was read to Aiman before magistrate Farah Nabihah Dan. No plea was recorded as murder cases are under the High Court’s jurisdiction.
Deputy public prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa appeared for the prosecution, while Aiman was unrepresented.
The court fixed Feb 19 for mention.
Police initially classified the case as sudden death. It was reclassified as murder after a post-mortem found that the victim had suffered blunt trauma to his head.
Checks of CCTV footage led to the arrest of Aiman on Dec 19.
