PETALING JAYA:

A man was charged in the Langkawi magistrates’ court today with murdering his ex-wife in the waters off Pantai Oak, Pulau Dayang Bunting, two weeks ago.

No plea was recorded from Shafiq Ma Ean Chaiyan, 26, after the charge was read out to him before magistrate Nurul Natasha Rizal, Harian Metro reported.

He nodded when asked if he understood the charge.

Shafiq allegedly killed Fadilah Saidon, 21, between 11am and 3pm on July 30.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years and no less than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Ain Nur Sofea Noridan represented the prosecution while Shafiq was unrepresented.

No bail was offered on the prosecution’s request, and the court scheduled Oct 14 for the next case mention, pending a DNA report from the chemistry department.
