PETALING JAYA: Sunway Square Mall has reversed its much-talked-about pet-friendly policy, saying pets are no longer allowed inside its enclosed indoor areas in compliance with a government directive.

According to a statement shared on social media, the policy change would be in effect immediately after local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim reaffirmed that pets are prohibited in shopping malls in the state.

It added that this was “to ensure a safe, hygienic and comfortable environment for all visitors.”

However, it said that pets are welcome at the designated outdoor pet-friendly park, Squarrel’s Playground, at Sunway South Quay Lake and are permitted to transit between the mall’s car park at B3 and B4 and the outdoor zone with guidance from mall security.

Sunway Square Mall also thanked the public for their understanding and apologised for any inconvenience caused by the sudden reversal.

The decision comes after earlier reports of the mall’s launch with a pet-friendly concept drew mixed reactions, with public discussions about the existing ban on pets in shopping complexes in .

Ng had said the policy remains in force and would be reviewed to balance international practices with local sensitivities.
