KUALA LUMPUR: The 47th Asean Summit concluded with a series of historic milestones for Malaysia and the region, marking a defining moment in the bloc’s pursuit of unity, peace and prosperity.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said among the key outcomes were the adoption of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Inclusive Green Growth and the accession of Timor-Leste as a member of Asean.

Others, he said, were the renewed commitments to strengthen regional housing resilience, smart city connectivity and the Asean Circular Economy Framework.

“In trade, Malaysia achieved a breakthrough by signing a Reciprocal Trade Agreement with the United States, becoming the first Asean nation and among the few globally to formalise such a pact.

“Following this, Bursa Malaysia and the ringgit saw positive movements, reflecting renewed investor confidence,” he said in a Facebook post.

Nga said the summit saw the attendance of major global leaders, including those from the US and , the United Nations secretary-general and heads of BRICS, G20 and the European Union, underscoring Malaysia’s growing international stature as a strategic and reliable partner.

“Malaysia’s success in hosting one of the most significant international events in recent years showed the professionalism and world-class capability of its civil service under the leadership of Datuk Seri Ibrahim, supported by strong collaboration with the private sector.

“Our civil servants have shown that Malaysia can deliver at the highest international standards when given the right direction and leadership.

“This summit has proven what our nation can achieve when the Madani government and the people work hand in hand.”

Nga also said the summit showcased Malaysia’s hospitality and culture to the world, with international attention drawn to lighter moments, including a video of US President Donald dancing that garnered over 1.1 million views on his Instagram account.

On Tuesday, Nga, as minister-in-attendance, bade farewell to Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone following the summit.
