WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has singled out Malaysia among other countries during a livestream on his administration’s new policy on fuel economy standards.
Trump had announced less stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards in what critics describe as a return to gasoline as a fuel of choice for cars instead of electric vehicles.
He said one of the other things that they are doing was thinking about allowing small compact cars in the US.
“..If you go to Japan where I just left, and if you go to South Korea and Malaysia and other countries, they have a very small car —sort of like the Beetle used to be with the Volkswagen— they’re very small, they’re really cute, and I said “How would that do in this country?”
“And everyone seems to think good but you’re not allowed to build them, and I’ve authorised the secretary to immediately approve the production of those cars, so you’ll be able to buy them.
“.. some of them are really beautiful actually if you take a look,” he said.
Trump was in Malaysia on Oct 26 to 27 in conjunction with the 13th Asean-United States Summit and 20th East Asia Summit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
During his visit, Trump, who travelled in a bulletproof limousine nicknamed The Beast when he was here, also witnessed the signing of the KL Peace Accord. – Agencies
