GEORGE TOWN, Sept 10 — Honorary Consul of Nepal Datuk Huan Cheng Guan has urged Malaysians to defer all non-essential travel to Nepal amid escalating unrest in the Himalayan nation.
He said the political situation remains highly volatile following the resignation of former prime minister KP Sharma Oli after deadly youth-led protests.
“It is important to avoid travel to Nepal unless absolutely necessary,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Huan added that his office is closely monitoring developments and will continue to provide updates to safeguard Malaysians with ties to Nepal.
The unrest, led primarily by Generation Z activists, was triggered by a sweeping, day-old ban on some 26 social media platforms.
The protests — fuelled by frustration over corruption, inequality and curbs on free expression — turned violent as security forces fired tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds, leaving at least 19 dead.
Yesterday, demonstrators set fire to the parliament building, government offices and residences of senior officials, prompting deployment of the army under an indefinite curfew.
Flight operations have also been disrupted. Kathmandu’s airport was closed amid the violence, leading to the diversion and cancellation of several international flights.
