SINGAPORE, Sept 17 — A Malaysian man was arrested after authorities at Tuas Checkpoint foiled an attempt to smuggle over 18,400 e-vaporisers and 1,400 related components into Singapore via a lorry on Monday.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the seizure marks the largest haul of smuggled e-vaporisers detected at Singapore’s land checkpoints since enhanced penalties came into effect on September 1.
“The exhibits and the suspect were referred to the Health Sciences Authority for further investigation,” ICA said in a Facebook post yesterday.
The agency said the Malaysia-registered lorry was flagged by ICA’s Integrated Targeting Centre through pre-arrival risk assessment and was directed for enhanced checks.
During the inspection, officers uncovered the illegal items from the lorry, which had been declared as “components for motorised external roll-up blinds”.
In August, ICA said it had stepped up checks at air, land and sea checkpoints to detect and deter attempts to smuggle e-vaporisers, as part of a Whole-of-Government effort against such products. — Bernama
