A Malaysian climber was reported to have suffered a fall while hiking up Mount Rinjani, located on Lombok island, at around noon, according to national park authorities.
A search and rescue operation is currently being carried out by multiple agencies, involving dozens of personnel and medical teams.
“The victim remains at the scene and is being assisted by the group leader along with three members of the climbing team,” the Mount Rinjani national park said in a statement on Saturday.
Park authorities identified the climber by the initials RAG, who was reported to have fallen in the Banyu Urip area. RAG began the climb on May 1, accompanied by a group of 23 people.
Standing at 3,726m high, Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and dominates the landscape of the relatively small island of Lombok. It contains a huge 50 sq km caldera in which sits the crater lake Segara Anak.
